If you are currently in the position to be buying a home then you may be excited to start shopping around. However, before you make a mad dash to the local estate agents or trawl through online pages, there are some important things you need to consider. Ideally, you need to sit down and work out what you need in a home that you want to buy. For instance, you might need or want a downstairs toilet or a big garden. You have to be prepared for some give or take as the perfect house may not exist for you.
Budget
The first thing you need to work out is how much you have to spend on your new house. If you don’t have the money laying around to buy your home outright (and let’s face it, how often does that happen?) then you will need to apply for a mortgage.
This is like a loan taken out on the house you are purchasing. You put down a deposit, usually around 20% of the asking price, then the bank supplies you with the rest. You make monthly repayments against your mortgage until it’s paid off. You can get varying lengths of mortgages so find the best one for you, you can use the help of a mortgage broker for that. They are experts in the property field and will always strive to get you the best deal possible.
Area
Take a look at different areas when it comes to shopping around for new houses. You may have your heart set on one area that you know, but there could be other amazing ones out there. If you commute to work then you need to make sure you aren’t moving too far out of the way as you don’t want to spend your life traveling. However, be aware that homes that are close to public transport links or major roads are more expensive than ones set off the beaten track.
You might also like to find an area with all local amenities nearby, this includes a supermarket, doctors, dentist, and schools if you plan on having children or already have them. Be sure to also check out the local crime rate of the areas you are looking at. The last thing you want is to be moving to an area with a high crime rate and not feeling safe while walking around during the day or at night.
Size
Another thing you need to think about and take into consideration is the size of the property you want. As the size of the home increases, so does the cost. There are cheaper ways to get extra room in homes, you don’t have to buy a four-bedroom property if that’s what you need. If you were to buy a three-bedroom property, then you could save a fortune. That extra money that you now have saved could get you a relatively cheap but great quality loft conversion. Therefore giving you that extra bedroom that you need for your family’s needs.
