During summer, the weather can be uncomfortably hot when enjoying the outdoors. But there are easy and affordable ways to make your outdoor living space more comfortable. Check out these six tips to cool down your outdoor area this summer.

1) Invest In Outdoor Ceiling Fans

Consider investing in outdoor ceiling fans to make your outdoor living area cooler this summer. These fans can operate effectively in any weather condition and offer a cool breeze that will help you tolerate the heat better.

Fans have various styles, sizes, and colours which can blend in with your home decor. For instance, you can opt for a sophisticated and modern-looking fan that complements your contemporary interiors or choose one with a rustic finish that adds a vintage vibe to your space.

They are also cheaper than other cooling options, such as air conditioners or evaporative coolers. The cost varies between $150 to $500, depending on the size and design selected.

2) Build A Pergola

A pergola is another way to make your outdoor living area cooler. A pergola acts as an open-air shelter which offers shade, thus minimising the direct sunlight that hits the area. It also provides more ventilation, allowing for better air circulation and reducing heat trapped in the space.

You can build a simple DIY pergola using wooden poles or posts. For example, you can use four poles placed into the ground and topped with cross beams that are secured by bolts or brackets. You can then use flat panels to create sides of your shelter and finish it off with climbing plants or vines to provide extra shade and add visual appeal.

If you do not want to DIY, you can look for pre-made pergola kits or hire a carpenter to build one for you. The cost of a basic pergola is between $500 to $3000.

3) Install Roll-Down Shades:

Roll-down shades are an effective and budget-friendly way to keep your outdoor living area cooler this summer. These shades can be pulled down or rolled up depending on how much sunlight exposure you want in the space.

They are also available in various fabrics, styles, and colours that will complement your home decor nicely. For example, you get either a single-shade design or multiple shades that allow you to adjust the amount of sunlight in your space.

Roll-down shades are generally more affordable than motorised awnings and are extremely easy to install. Additionally, they can be used in all types of weather conditions, making them an ideal choice for your outdoor area.

4) Plant Trees

Planting trees is another cost-effective way to keep your outdoor living area cooler this summer. Trees can provide a natural cooling effect by blocking the sun’s heat and supplying shade for the entire space.

Moreover, you can choose trees that produce fruits or flowers for added benefits. For instance, fruit trees such as apples, oranges, lemons, or figs will not only add beauty to your outdoor space but also furnish you with fresh fruits during harvest seasons.

5) Grow Vines

In addition to trees, growing vines near or around the outdoor living space is another great way of keeping it cooler in summer. Vines are excellent sun blockers as they provide extra shade for a larger area. Plus, their lush foliage creates a pleasant atmosphere that will make your outdoor living area look more inviting.

If you want quick results, consider planting fast-growing perennial vines such as wisteria and clematis, as they mature quickly compared to other types of vine plants.

6) Use Reflective Materials

Using reflective materials is an effective and budget-friendly way to keep your outdoor living space cool during the summer months. These materials deflect heat from the area, thus reducing its temperature significantly. For example, you can paint your walls with a light colour such as white or cream, reflecting more sunlight than darker shades.

You can also use aluminium foil or special reflective fabrics to cover windows or patio furniture that receives direct sunlight. This will help keep the area cooler by reflecting off the sun’s hot rays.

Keeping your outdoor living area cool in summer does not have to be expensive. There are several budget-friendly options available that can help reduce heat and maintain a comfortable atmosphere in the space. Follow these tips to stay cool and enjoy your outdoor living area this summer without breaking the bank.
