Summer can be a magical time filled with sun, fun, and late-night socialising. However, the warm weather and extended daylight hours can also wreak havoc on our sleep patterns. In this blog post, we’ll explore strategies for ensuring that you are mitigating the effects of the season in order to help you achieve better sleep during the summer months.

Staying Cool at Night

One of the primary challenges of sleeping in the summer is staying cool at night. When our bodies are warmer, we move out of a state of relaxation and become more alert, which is counterproductive to falling asleep. To help maintain a comfortable temperature while you sleep, consider investing in a soft, cooling mattress. These mattresses are designed to regulate temperature and wick away moisture, ensuring a cooler and more comfortable night’s sleep.

In addition to a cooling mattress, you can also use lightweight, breathable bed linens and wear moisture-wicking sleepwear. Using a fan or air conditioner to maintain a comfortable room temperature can further help you stay cool and drift off to sleep more easily. Keeping a window open may seem like a wise move too, but it’s usually just letting warm air in and also increasing the incidence of noise from outside which can make sleep harder.

Limiting Exposure to Sunlight

While sunlight is essential for maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm, too much exposure can have adverse effects on your sleep. Extended daylight hours can trick our bodies into staying awake longer, leading to stress and sleep difficulties. To combat this issue, try to limit your exposure to bright sunlight, particularly in the late afternoon and evening. This can help signal your body that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep.

If you’re struggling to fall asleep due to excessive daylight, consider using blackout blinds or curtains in your bedroom. These can block out sunlight and create a nighttime feeling in your home, making it easier to fall asleep and maintain a regular sleep schedule. Of course, most of us enjoy a little more sunlight, so the occasional longer evening won’t be too problematic, but if sleep has been a problem recently, dialling back the exposure can make a big difference.

Managing Daily Routines

Summer’s longer days and increased social activities can lead to changes in our daily routines. Eating and engaging in physical activities later in the day can contribute to sleep difficulties. To promote better sleep, try to maintain a consistent daily schedule, even if it doesn’t get dark until later in the evening.

Make an effort to eat dinner at a regular time, avoiding large, heavy meals close to bedtime. Engage in physical activities earlier in the day to allow your body ample time to wind down before sleep. Additionally, try to establish a relaxing bedtime routine that signals to your body that it’s time for rest. This can include activities such as reading, listening to calming music, or practicing meditation.

Conclusion

Sleeping well during the summer months can be challenging, but with the right strategies in place, it’s possible to get the restorative rest you need. Staying cool at night with a cooling mattress, limiting exposure to sunlight, and managing daily routines can all contribute to better sleep during this time of year. By implementing these tips, you can enjoy the summer season while still maintaining a healthy sleep schedule.
