If you have been working at home all this time, you may have become adept at the odd email to promote yourself. When it comes to this, especially if you have just made a start in working for yourself, you’ve got to figure out the best promotional tactics. Whether you are just starting to sell items online, or you have finally realised that you’ve got to start your passion project, you’ve got to remember some of the key approaches to business acumen. It is important to remember that when you are trying to promote, you have got to get the basics right, such as your unique selling proposition, your elevator pitch, and your marketing. So what does it really mean to market yourself in a proper way, but also one that is cost-friendly?
Getting Your Logo Into the Real World
One of the biggest mistakes we all make these days is thinking that we can save money by doing everything online. But the fact is that there are plenty of ways for you to push yourself forward into the real world. In order to differentiate yourself from the competition, going into the real world can seem counter-intuitive, but it is the best way to separate yourself from the crowd.
Start by creating business cards and give them to people out in the street. There are many folded business card printing services available to design your logo and branding. Online recognition is important, but you have to branch out into the real world. All types of real-world branding like print advertising and newspaper features don’t have to be expensive.
Do Not Dwell on Social Media
We can over-rely on social media to get us the likes and clicks we need. But if you don’t have a good project, nobody will go to bat for you. When you send out a link to friends for them to share your page, a lot of people will look at it, and realise that they have no interest in it so they won’t bother sharing it, or won’t even “like” it. There is no point in getting frustrated at these people because it is their own platform.
There may be a couple of people who will be willing to share your page, which could get to the right people. Ultimately, those people on your friends list that you are very seldom in contact with could be the people that you come to rely on, or those other people who have friends in far-flung places. It’s important that social media forms part of your promotional tactics, but if you rely on social media to do everything, you will be bitterly disappointed.
Go to Networking Events
Face-to-face networking is the best way to promote yourself. When you are setting up a small business, like an Etsy page, you will invariably come across other like-minded people. The important thing to remember is that you don’t view them as competition. They are more than likely creating different products and services than you. This is why networking is important.
You could find yourself going to many face-to-face networking events, but there are also numerous online networking events that can grow your reputation. It’s important to build business relationships in the right way. Remember – you need to do something for them, rather than thinking that they need to serve your needs. This is why you need to fine-tune things like your elevator pitch and have a stack of business cards. Networking is important, but it can be overwhelming. Think about being as close to yourself as possible rather than having that business head on your shoulders.
Entering Industry Competitions
You need to strengthen your credentials in an organic way. It’s more difficult these days because of customer reviews. Many people skew the customer reviews, and it is another way to be crafty and push your products into the minds of the essential people. If you are looking for tangible credentials, look for award competitions within your industry, including local or regional ones. Even if you make the shortlist but don’t win, this nomination could still go in your marketing materials to raise your profile. This could be one of the best ways to bring a couple of more people on board.
Promoting yourself is a tough job. You must learn the fine art of promoting yourself. It does not come easy, but there are things that you can do that are not just effective, but are cheap as well.
