Mums & Fitness: How To Recover Faster & Keep Moving

This is a collaborative post.

What does a mum’s day look like? Here’s a brief overview of a typical day as a mum: preparing breakfast, packing lunchboxes, waking up the kids, getting the kids ready for school, organising school runs… and it isn’t even 9 AM yet. If you have younger kids, your mornings are even more hectic.

Needless to say, the rest of the day is going to look just the same. On top of that, you could also be trying to juggle work duties, household management, and family responsibilities outside of children. So, how much time do you truly have for self-care? The answer is not much. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.

On the contrary, looking after yourself matters more than ever, and that’s why a lot of mums are trying to incorporate fitness into their routines. Staying fit will help protect your health, and, therefore, ensure you can be there for your family. It all would be perfect if fitness didn’t have unpleasant side effects, too!

Managing Soreness

You finally squeezed in a workout—yay, go you! But now your muscles are staging a full-on protest, and the idea of bending down to pick up toys (again) feels… impossible. We’ve all been there. Post-workout soreness is totally normal, but when you’re juggling work, parenting, and everything else, there’s just no time to slow down.

So what helps? A warm bath after the kids go to bed can work wonders (throw in some Epsom salts if you’ve got them). But it you’re looking for a little extra support, CBD has become a go-to for many moms. They may help take the edge off soreness while supporting a better night’s sleep. Because let’s be honest, sleep is the ultimate recovery tool when you’re doing it all.

Fuel Your Body

Your body works hard, not only as a mum but also as a mum doing fitness. If you’re not fuelling it properly, that post-workout soreness can hit harder and hang around longer. Soreness and fatigue are unavoidable when you start fitness anew, but fueling your body can help reduce those unpleasant sensations.

You’ve heard it all about stretching and warming up to reduce soreness. The tips are 100% true. But they do not eliminate all side effects. If your life is hectic (as it often is for mums), stretching isn’t going to keep you energised after your morning jog.

Start small with protein. Add a scoop of protein to your morning smoothie or stir it into overnight oats. Protein is a game-changer because this is precisely what your muscles need to recover. As a rule of thumb, you want to be aiming for 0.8 grams of protein for every 2.2 pounds of weight. It’s best to gradually increase your intake over a short period to avoid digestive issues.

If you’re finding it tough to keep up, other supplements can help your recovery like collagen, BCAAs, or even hydration tablets. The goal is supporting your body so you can show up strong in every part of your day, whether that’s lifting weights or lifting a toddler who skipped their nap.

Are you ready to make fitness a part of your busy life as a mum? Great! Remember to help your body through it so you can still be fit and be a mum.
