11 Ways To Make Your Life Both More Frugal and More Enjoyable

4th February 2021 by shoestringjane@outlook.com Leave a Comment

This is a collaborative post.

If you’re looking for ways to be more frugal, you might think that your life must become less enjoyable. However, this is not the case! You can save money, live frugally, and make your life even more enjoyable than it was before. It’s all about your mindset and how you approach it. With that in mind, are you ready to save money and have more fun than ever before? Read on to find out how.

1# Vow To Be Kinder To The Planet

Start by making a vow to be kinder to the planet. Are you doing your utmost to save water, electricity, and recycle? If not, now is the time. This is a great way to become more frugal, as the less energy you use, the more money you save. You’ll end up getting more creative, and you’ll have an enormous sense of wellbeing as you know you’re doing some good for the world.

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle isn’t the easiest option, but it can be extremely rewarding and you will love meeting people with the same values as you. We’re all in this together, and we only have one planet earth. Let’s protect it the best we can.

2# Value Experiences, Not Things

Start valuing experiences, rather than things. Of course it’s nice to ‘own’ things. Some people have a thing for clothes, others for gadgets, others for jewellery. Whatever your vice is, try to change your outlook so you value experiences instead.

You can still own things, but if you put more worth on material items you’ll always need to buy the next best thing. Not only can this be damaging for the planet, it’s damaging for your wallet. Wanting to experience more rather than buy more can be free, and massively enriching. You can learn something from each and every experience you have. Live in the moment, be more frugal, enjoy new scenes and meet new people. You’ll be a better person for it.

3# Use Your Car As Little As Possible

People get into the habit of using their cars for even short journeys. Why not walk instead? It requires more time management, but you’ll become fitter and happier. Biking or using public transport can also be fantastic alternatives to driving. See if you can have just one car for the household, if you really need one.

You can also downsize and buy a smaller car that uses less fuel. This may depend on where you work, the sort of journeys you need to take, and other factors. However, if you make the effort to use your car less, you should notice a profound impact on your mood, fitness, and bank balance.

Of course, this may also decrease the chance of needing to pay for over-expensive insurance packages that you may not have needed in the first place, too. In terms of safety, driving less will also decrease your statistical likelihood of encountering an issue on the roads and the use of the best car accident lawyer, which could be considered a win.

Furthermore, should you be involved in an accident, it is always best to seek support from an expert personal injury lawyer, like Dennis Hernandez. Of which, they will get you the right medical and financial support that you will need after experiencing an incident on the road.

4# Look For Used Items Before Buying New

We all need to buy certain things, whether a new coat for winter when our old one falls apart, or a household appliance. Why not look for used items, or even refurbished items before buying new? Many of these items are such a bargain, and you’ll often find that they have hardly been used. Just be warned: you can easily get addicted to second hand shopping! You should still only buy second hand items when you truly need something.

5# Downsize Your Home

Could you perhaps downsize your home? This isn’t something to take lightly, but it could be a great option if you currently live in a home that is more than big enough for your needs. You could perhaps downsize to a loft apartment, or even a bungalow.

Having a huge house is often a symbol of success – but times are changing. Living in a smaller home means less maintenance, fewer costs, and a cosier space. If you love it, it shouldn’t matter how large it is. You don’t need a mansion to be happy, and you certainly shouldn’t worry about whether people think you’re successful or not.

6# Eat Out Less

Eating out costs a lot of money, especially if you’re buying food for your whole family. Have fun cooking meals together at home instead. Experiment with different recipes and ingredients. Make main meals and desserts. Make it a bonding activity! You’ll have so much fun, eat yummy food, and save money. You can eat out occasionally, but be mindful – the costs really add up.

7# Create Your Very Own Minimalist Wardrobe

Creating a capsule wardrobe can be fun, as you are able to buy pieces you truly love and know you will wear all the time. The idea is you invest less in fast fashion (that falls apart quickly and ends up on a landfill), and invest in pieces that will stand the test of time. You should know what you like to wear and your own individual style to get this right. You can take your time with it, just get started!

8# Stop Impulse Buying

Impulse buying is usually easily done online, as we don’t actually hand over any physical cash, or even swipe a card. Shopping without a reason or a list is bad news. Only ever shop when you need something – this means not browsing for fun, either! You’ll often see something you like and feel tempted to buy it.

Try having a ‘no buy’ few months where you just buy the essentials. Some people even choose to do this for a whole year!

9# Use The Library to be More Frugal

We need to support our libraries, and what could be better than reading books for free? Plus, books won’t be taking up a ton of space in your house. You never know what sort of events and readings you might stumble across while you’re there, either. If you’re a big reader, you’ll save a fortune and be more frugal by visiting your library.

10# Take Up Frugal Exercise

You don’t need a gym membership to get fit and healthy! Walking outdoors is great for your health and mindset, and you can do so many amazing bodyweight movements. You’re never too fit to go back to basics. You can eventually add in minimal equipment, like a band or the odd weight. Working out from home can be as challenging as you want to make it.

11# Become A DIY Pro

Of course you shouldn’t try to fix something you know nothing about, but there are many resources out there that can teach you a thing or two and help you be more frugal around the home. Build your DIY skills and save a fortune!
