Kitchen Design: What Does The Next Decade Look Like?

19th August 2021 by shoestringjane@outlook.com Leave a Comment

This is a collaborative post.

The kitchen has battled it out with the living room for the most stylish room in the home, and it seems like it’s winning. The kitchen is a great place to style because of one reason; the sheer amount of different materials on display.

Your island can be made of stone such as marble, your cupboards can be made of wood such as oak, your appliances are most likely going to be made of steel or copper and your splashback can be made from glass or tiles. No other room in the entire home has this variation in style and materials. So for the next decade, which trends will be here to stay?

New tiled splashbacks

For a long time, steel and square tiles have been the main thing to have. But, the types of tiles you can have, have shifted dramatically. In this post, How to maximise your kitchen tile splashback . you can take a look at the tiles being used. They are customized and  the colour is deep and rich. The splashback is not just a small patch on the wall, it’s elongated throughout the room creating a style that matches the rest of the kitchen.

The form is a big deal, and that is why the pattern, style, shape, size and fit of your tiles is so important. This is something that is growing in popularity because it is so daring and stylish. We predict this will carry on for the next few years before it starts getting challenged by any other trend.

Moving the table out

For a long time, the dining room was pretty much a slice of the kitchen. The kitchen was longer, open plan and it just made sense to have it merge into the dining area. But now, we are seeing a little bit of a shift in terms of open plans. People like to style rooms and, when you have dining mixed with cooking, it doesn’t leave much opportunity to do this.

However, the dining room is making a return and this means the kitchen can fully be styled for cooking, preparing, chatting, drinking and hanging out. The dining area injected some earth tones, lighting and a need for neutral colours like white and beige as no one wants to sit in the dark corner. The dining table is out, so use the space wisely.

Contrasting colours

Nowadays it’s not just about a simple two-tone job, now we want contrasting colours. Yes, we no longer mind colours clashing and it’s all because maximalism is creating huge tsunami waves in the home interior design world.

We want to be excited, our eyes are bored of grey, black and white. So pick green for your cupboards, purple for your walls, yellow for your kitchen appliances and coloured kitchen equipment such as knives and big spoons.

These kitchen design trends will be here for some time. They are affordable, they are completely different from what we have been used to seeing and they are practical.
