This is a collaborative post.
You’re likely to be reading this blog post because you’ve got a garden that is nothing more than a concrete hardstanding. Such an outdoor space might appeal to some people, but you probably hate it and want to have a “normal” garden once again.
As you can imagine, there’s much work involved in transforming such an outdoor space into a garden with grass, plants, and other things you’ll likely find in gardens.
But, it’s not an impossible task! The following points illustrate the steps needed to turn a concrete jungle into a garden – and how to do so without spending a fortune.
Break Up The Concrete
Arguably the most significant part of your project will involve breaking up the concrete laid down in your garden. In some cases, it might be simple enough to remove if there are concrete slabs laid down on the ground.
However, if large concrete sections are set in place, you will need to break each part into smaller pieces. Doing so will enable you to transport them away to your local waste disposal centre.
It’s worth hanging onto some of the broken-up concrete as you can use it later, as described further down this page.
Discard Some Of The Concrete
Once your concrete hardstanding is now in hundreds or thousands of smaller pieces, the next task involves getting rid of it from your garden.
The bits you want to discard should be small enough to fit into rubble bags, and there are two things you can do with those rubble bags.
Firstly, you can hire a skip and carefully place them inside it for uplift later when you’re reading. Secondly, you can transport each bag to your local tip and dispose of each bag in the appropriate area.
Rotavate And Flatten The Soil
Once your garden is concrete-free, the next stage is to rotavate the soil with a tiller and use a device like a Wacker plate to compact the ground and make the surface flat.
Both tasks aren’t challenging; however, they can be time-consuming if you’ve got a lot of ground to cover. You can use garden tools like hire tillers and Wacker plates from a local DIY or construction equipment rental shop to keep your costs down.
Spread Some Grass Seeds
When you’ve got freshly compacted and levelled soil, you’ll need to spread some grass seeds. It’s worth looking online at suppliers of grass seed for lawns, landscaping and more as you have more control over the type of grass you grow and the quality of it.
Create A Crazy Paving Path
Lastly, do you remember the broken-up concrete you saved in your earlier endeavours? Now is the time to put them to good use by creating some crazy paving!
In a nutshell, crazy paving is where you use materials like your reclaimed concrete to create a flat and solid surface.
You can lay them onto a bed of sharp sand, level them, and cover the gaps with kiln dried sand, or you can lay them onto wet concrete for a more permanent solution.
