When it comes to self-care, sometimes it seems as if it can be expensive, right? If you go to a salon, you probably will be shocked to see how pricey a wash is. If you look on Amazon or even beauty-oriented websites, the hair care products can sometimes be in the hundreds for tiny bottles. But with that said, when it comes to improving yourself, whether it be your hair or your skin, you need to know that you don’t always have to break the bank. Think of it this way: taking care of yourself doesn’t need to be a luxury.

Sure, a lot of products are marketed as luxury, but this itself isn’t always the case. So, with that said, there are so many ways that you can not only take care of your hair but even have a full-blown glow-up, and all of this can be done frugally, too! You can go the more old-fashioned route with foraging (something that’s become more popular over the last couple of years), but there are some other frugal tips, too. So, with that said, here’s everything you need to know!

Why Does It Get So Expensive?

Have you ever found yourself browsing the hair care aisle only to be stunned by the seemingly exorbitant prices of certain products? It’s no secret that hair care can be expensive. Sometimes it can feel a tad gut-wrenching, too. Because this is a basic necessity, why does it come with such a hefty price tag? Well, there are several reasons behind it, and honestly, not all of these are justified either.

Quality

Not all hair care products are made equally, and the first giveaway is how you’ll feel when using one. Premium ingredients such as botanical extracts, essential oils, and protein complexes often come with a higher price tag due to their superior performance and benefits for hair health.

Marketing

If they’re marketing shampoo as a luxury item from a luxury brand, then this immediately makes it more expensive. Sometimes, the shampoo isn’t any different than the standard stuff.

Where You Buy

Sometimes, the exact same item may have a markup depending on where it’s sold. This isn’t anything new, but it’s still something to keep in mind.

What You Can Do on a Budget

So what you read above was to give you an idea of why some hair care products can be more on the pricier side, justified or not; it’s just how it is. But with that said, you don’t need to think that you’re stuck with your hair and its current condition. Sometimes, the biggest secret to magnificent hair can be knowing how to condition hair properly; seriously, sometimes, that’s it! Everyone’s hair totally varies, and the care put into it might vary too.

But if it’s just not knowing how to wash and condition properly, there are other ways to be frugal when undergoing a total haircare transformation.

Are You Mastering the Basics?

This is basically piggybacking on what’s being said above. Before diving into any extravagant treatments or products, ensure your hair care routine covers the fundamentals. This includes regular washing with a quality shampoo and conditioner suitable for your hair type. Opt for products free from harsh chemicals that can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dull and lifeless.

Are you using a big glob of shampoo or just a little bit? Are you using a shampoo brush to get rid of all the residue that might be on your scalp? How about a scalp massage when washing your hair? How long is the shampoo in your hair? What about the conditioner? How hot is the water? If water is too hot, that alone can damage your hair.

How about drying your hair? Are you using heat? Are you towel drying? There are many questions, but you need to start with the basics to see what can be changed. You don’t need to spend any money whatsoever when it comes to learning and understanding the basics. In fact, this is the biggest and most important tip of them all!

Trim Regularly

Don’t underestimate the power of a good trim! Regular trims help remove split ends and prevent further damage, leaving your hair looking healthier and more vibrant. You don’t necessarily need to visit a salon for this—invest in a pair of quality hair scissors and learn some basic trimming techniques to do it yourself at home.

Look into DIYing Hair Masks

So most hair masks are seen as a major luxury, there’s no doubt about that, so it might really help out to just DIY one instead. There might even be a chance that you have all the ingredients right in your home already.

So go ahead and treat your hair to some DIY pampering sessions with homemade hair masks. Ingredients like avocado, coconut oil, honey, and yogurt can work wonders in nourishing and revitalising your hair. There are plenty of recipes online, so feel free to experiment with different recipes to find what works best for your hair type. These homemade treatments are not only effective but also incredibly cost-effective compared to salon alternatives.

Embrace Natural Styling

Give your hair a break from heat styling tools and embrace your hair’s natural texture. Air-drying your hair or styling it with minimal heat can help prevent damage and maintain its natural shine (but don’t towel dry your hair either). So, if you’re super keen on doing something to your hair, it might help to just experiment with braids, twists, and updos for effortless, budget-friendly hairstyles that still look chic and stylish. You don’t need to use a flat iron or curler all the time; in fact, these shouldn’t be used too often, either.

Shop Smart

It’s okay if you want to treat yourself to luxury haircare products like Ollaplex, for example. But it’s best to get something like this on a discount, so be sure to keep an eye out for sales, discounts, and coupons when purchasing hair care products. You’d be surprised to learn that many drugstore brands offer high-quality products at affordable prices, especially when they’re on sale.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Don’t forget that the health of your hair starts from within. When it comes to glow-ups, whether it be your skin, hair, nails, or even your mental health, then you need to think about your physical health. Getting enough sleep and what you’re eating is super important, but you need to think about what you drink, too. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients essential for healthy hair growth, but shine too. So, you’ll seriously need to incorporate foods like salmon, nuts, spinach, and eggs into your diet to nourish your hair from the inside out.

Practice Patience and Consistency

You really need to keep in mind that you can’t change your hair overnight. Sure, you can hydrate it, cut it, of course, and even colour it. But if you want to be completely silky and shiny, like what you see in shampoo commercials, then you have to understand it will take some time.  Just be sure to stick to your budget-friendly hair care routine, be gentle with your hair, and trust the process.

While the results may not be immediate, with dedication and perseverance, you’ll gradually notice improvements in the health, appearance, and overall glow of your hair. So be sure to incorporate what you can, but make it into a full-blown habit, not something temporary.
