Fill Up That Penny Jar! How The Whole Family Can Save Money

Having a family can mean a considerable drain on your finances, and there will be times when you have to pull together as a unit to save. Now, it can be a mammoth task, especially if you have children but need money for school meals, uniforms, and so forth. But, for every member of the family, there are ways around saving, and what are these?

The Parents

As parents, we have control over the finances, but the biggest obstacle to overcome is not about tackling debt, but rather, getting into a money-saving mindset. This can be difficult when you have children who are after top quality items, but by making a few simple changes of your attitude towards money, it can make a big difference. If you have an incredible amount of debt, there are things you can due to pay this off. Of course, there’s the typical route, such as loans. You can get secured homeowner loans from Evolution Money, as well as other loan providers, but before you get to that point, it’s important to evaluate how much debt you really have. There are approaches that can be used, such as the debt-snowball method, but also, evaluating your lifestyle and making sacrifices will benefit everyone. While you and your partner might not get time away as a couple, you can still have quality time together for cheap. You can come up with some stay at home date ideas instead of going to an expensive restaurant. And while staying at home isn’t as exciting as going out, is there a compromise between the two? For example, going out for a drink, rather than a whole three-course meal. But while there are so many options to cut back on your expenditure, the best manner in which to do it is to examine your expenses thoroughly and look at what you can eliminate. For example, gym memberships, your mobile package, or television subscriptions could all add up to a lot of money. And by trimming these, or getting rid of them completely, you will see the benefits. By going through your bank statement, and looking for the biggest expenses that are necessary, then you will have a handle on what you can get rid of. And while it’s nice to get your children what they want for Christmas, the older they get, the less they need. And is there any point in maxing out your credit cards for one day? Again, this goes back to the attitude you have towards money. Once you get injury money-saving mindset, and then, after a while, it becomes a habit.

The Children

The parents will have the biggest control of the finances, but that’s not to say the children can’t do anything about it. Of course, if your children are old enough, a part-time job will benefit the whole family. But, if you’ve got children who are too young to grasp the concept of saving money, it’s easier for the parents to maintain a sense of financial control. But, for those children who are old enough to know better, and have had an abundance of material gifts throughout their life, it’s time for them to look at what they don’t use anymore. For example, for those children that are old enough to not play with toys, but still have a toy chest full of old figures, they can all go on eBay. The same with clothes, they can go through their wardrobe and sell anything that they haven’t worn in a year. As fashions change with the wind, the temptation can be for your child to have the best of the best. And while brands are important, especially in the schoolyard, it’s not essential. But, if your children are adamant about having branded clothing, there are online outlets that sell things so much cheaper. And don’t forget, eBay is a treasure trove of branded items for a cheap cost. In addition to this, rather than having school meals, packed lunches will be a great way to save on grocery shopping. Groceries are one of the big expenses, and if the children snack on an abundance of unhealthy treats, these can cost a pretty penny. By getting rid of these, not only will you save money, but your children will be healthier and happier in the long run.

Every member of the family can contribute towards saving money. You might think it’s down to the parents exclusively, but in fact, there is something that everybody can do. Whether it’s about adjusting expectations, or by taking a different approach to buying branded products, there is always a way to save money as a family.
