Choosing the Right Dog for Your Family

This is a collaborative post.

There are literally hundreds of different varieties of dogs on the planet and our canine companions come in every imaginable form and proportion. And just like people, no two of them are exactly alike.

Many people make the mistake of selecting a dog only based on its physical look ,without first conducting any research to determine whether or not it will be able to meet the behavioural requirements of the canine. The vast majority of dogs have been developed for a certain function, yet despite this, they will still maintain their innate instincts, whether they were raised to defend, hunt, or herd. We have created this guide in the hopes that it will assist you in gaining a better understanding of the distinctions between the many breeds of dogs and which breeds tend to make the most suitable pets for families.

Other aspects, such as the environment in which your dog was born and raised as a puppy, also play a significant role in the formation of its personality. Therefore, it is essential that if you want your dog to live in your home with you as a member of the family, you choose a puppy that was born and reared in a home with other people and their children.

Let’s take a look at some of the other factors that you need to consider when choosing the right breed of dog for your family.

What size dog are you looking for?

When choosing a dog breed, the most important consideration you should make is based on the square footage of your home. Do you occupy a room in a larger house or a studio flat? Would you be able to accommodate a huge dog in your home? Or is there a limit to the size of the dog that can be accommodated in your living space? Do you have a back garden where the dog may run about and get some exercise, as well as a place for them to go and do their toileting business?

It is possible that large dog breeds like Great Danes are more likely to suffer from health issues like hip dysplasia or ruptured ACLs. However, smaller-sized dogs, such as Chihuahuas, may be more susceptible to injury in the event of a physical accident or to the effects of colder weather.

What is your everyday schedule like?

If you want to give your pet the attention they require, the best way to do so is to select a breed of dog that is suitable for your lifestyle and routine. Do you have the necessary amount of free time to train a puppy the right way? Will you be able to take a dog who has a lot of energy out for long walks and give them the exercise they require? Do you rather have an older, more self-sufficient dog that is able to cope with being left home alone throughout the day?

What kind of activity level are you looking for?

When selecting a dog breed, it is essential to look for a pet whose level of activity is compatible with your own. A dog owner with a low amount of energy might be rapidly worn out by a dog with a high amount of energy, while a dog owner who is constantly on the move can become frustrated by a dog with a low amount of energy.

Do you lead a lifestyle that is full of activity? Are you the type to seek out new experiences or do you prefer to stay in? Do you get a lot of everyday exercise, such as when you go running, trekking, or camping, or do you prefer to take more leisurely walks around the neighbourhood? Will a dog that has a high degree of energy be able to keep up with your busy daily schedule?

Where is the closest dog park located, and how close is it? Or would you want a couch potato that is content to spend all of his time curled up on your lap? A dog whose requirements are comparable to your own will make the ideal companion for you.

What sort of breed do you want?

Different breeds naturally exhibit a wide variety of characteristics. There are seven different groupings of dog breeds, as stated by the American Kennel Club (AKC) (Working, Herding, Hound, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Toy, and Terrier). Because every breed comes with a unique set of characteristics, it is essential to do research to find one that is the best match for your own unique set of characteristics. If you have a severe allergy to animal fur, a hypoallergenic dog breed like the poodle can be the best option for you, provided that its other characteristics are suitable for your lifestyle.

The ideal characteristics that you seek can sometimes be found in a mixed breed dog, but it is impossible to know for sure if you will obtain every advantage that you are hoping for from such a dog. When they become warm, purebred bulldogs and pugs, for example, have relatively small nasal canals, which can hinder their ability to breathe properly.

What age would you be hoping for?

During each stage of a dog’s life—puppyhood, adolescence, adulthood, and senior years—the dog’s personality typically goes through significant shifts. Adult dogs have a greater chance of being already housetrained and may have temperaments that are less excitable than those of younger canines. Buying an older dog is less of a gamble than taking a chance on a younger puppy because you already know the dog’s history in terms of both its health and their temperament. On the other hand, there are some senior dogs that do not do well around young children (sometimes as a result of traumatic experiences in the past), so this is another essential factor to take into consideration.

Consider the history of the dog – especially if you have children

You will be aware of the history of the dog if you purchase it from a dog breeder. It is possible that the past will not be completely clear if you adopt from an animal shelter. There is a chance that your dog was abandoned or perhaps abused in their past, and those experiences can have a lasting impact on its attitude. However, this does not necessarily mean that a dog with a troubled past will not be the ideal companion for you; you just need to be willing to put in the effort to train it properly.

Coat length and shedding

It is possible that some members of the family have an extreme sensitivity to certain types of fur. Even though there is no such thing as a dog that is not allergic (the allergen is in the saliva, not the coat), long-haired dogs might aggravate the symptoms of some types of allergies.

There are breeds of dogs that shed far less than others. For instance, in comparison to a Collie, a Dachshund has significantly less shedding.

There are other factors besides shedding that might cause allergies. It is possible that some housekeeping is in order. You can decide that a dog with short hair is the best option for you if you want to reduce the number of times per day that you have to use the vacuum cleaner.

Should you visit an animal shelter or rescue centre?

Many households take trips to the local animal shelter in order to select a canine companion and fall in love with them. This is an excellent method to involve everyone in the family in the decision-making process. Rescue organisations for animals often provide temporary housing for stray or abandoned animals that are still looking for their forever homes. The adoption fees at these shelters are typically lower than those charged by breeders or pet stores, and you will not have to worry about supporting an unethical business practise like a puppy farm.

After you have determined what it is that you are searching for, you can start going to your neighbourhood shelter and collaborating with the people who work there. Inform them in detail about the characteristics you want in the dog that will become your future pet.

When you take your new puppy home, there will be place in your home for another animal in need because you adopted it from an animal shelter. This is one of the many advantages of adopting an animal. You also receive a variety of options to choose from, including the animal’s age, size, temperament, and so on. You have the option of picking the dog with whom you have the strongest bond.

Before you adopt a dog, it could be a good idea to foster a local rescue dog or puppy first so that your family can get used to the notion of taking care of a dog. Because doing so makes room for an additional dog who is in need, it will also help save the life of a dog in the shelter for a longer period of time than would otherwise be possible.
