Deciding that you want to have a pet is a great decision. Pets can bring a lot of love and joy to your family. However, when you have a pet there is one more mouth to feed.

When you’re trying to live frugally this can be a problem. The best way to ensure that a pet does not end up costing you more than you can afford is to select an inexpensive one. If you are open to having other pets besides dogs and cats, here are a few of the most inexpensive pets that you can have.

Fish

You probably know someone who has an aquarium, or you may know someone who only has one goldfish. No matter what kind of fish you decide to buy and keep as a pet, this is a very inexpensive option, and it is a joy to watch them swim around.

You will need to buy a fish tank, food, and decorations for the tank. This is relatively affordable.  Fish make excellent pets especially if you are on a budget.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are one of the most entertaining pets you can have. The only thing you have to ensure is that you provide a living space that is large enough for them to roam about whenever they want.

They like to use hay for nesting and they even eat it as a snack. Your guinea pig will need adequate bedding and may require a visit to the vet now and then. Other than that they won’t cost you a lot to feed and they make great pets for both adults and kids.

Alpacas

An alpaca is one of the most lovable pets that you can have. They are large animals but if you have the space to keep one you can expect to reap a lot of benefits from having an alpaca.

First of all, they make excellent guard animals especially if you own a farm and have other animals that are susceptible to coyotes or other wild animals. Since alpacas are large and have such an upright stance preying animals tend to be intimidated and will be scared off.

An alpaca also has fleece that you can harvest and sell. If you don’t want to sell it you can use the fleece yourself for making sweaters or even mittens. You can find an alpaca for sale online or you can get one by visiting farms that sell them.

Parakeets

One of the cheapest birds you can keep as a pet is a parakeet. They are lovely to look at and only require a cage and small amounts of food.

Parakeets do need to visit the vet on occasion but this is probably the highest expense you will have from having one of these birds as a pet.

Keeping a pet when you are on a shoestring budget is not difficult; you just have to pick the right one. There is no need to deprive yourself of animal companionship and all the joy they can bring because you want to live frugally.
