Like many aspects of life here at Shoestring Cottage, we aim for sustainability wherever possible. That’s why, three years ago, we switched to a green energy provider, Good Energy. We haven’t looked back and are really happy to be powered by green energy. Here is why.

100% renewable electricity
I love that all of the electricity provided by Good Energy is renewable. They source all of it from certified renewables produced by over 1400 independent generators. In fact, they pioneered incentives for renewable businesses over a decade ago, and continue to try to make it easier for the public and businesses to generate their own electricity.
Another green energy offered is carbon neutral gas. For a start, 6% of the gas Good Energy source is biogas. It’s a small sum currently but will hopefully expand over time. This is produced by breaking down organic matter such as farm waste, putting to use potent greenhouse gases such as methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. I would like to see the figure on this being much higher in the future.
They also neutralise the emissions from the rest of the gas they sell by investing in verified carbon reduction schemes in Malawi, Vietnam and Nepal. Not perfect, but better than what most of the other bigger gas providers are offering.
Brilliant customer service
Having had a truly horrific experience with First Utility before we switched, good customer service was absolutely essential to us.
We were repeatedly billed incorrectly and were overcharged by about £2000. Every time I called to try to unravel the mess I waited 45 minutes or more, only to have some 20 year old with minimal training fail to get to the bottom of it. I got a different answer every time! The ombudsman had to sort it out for us in the end. It was incredibly stressful.
We knew we wanted a green energy provider and researched reviews carefully beforehand. Good Energy repeatedly got some of the best reviews for customer service. Since then, through all my dealings I have never had an issue. I can ask questions by email rather than having to call and queue. The responses are fast and polite. Above all, they make sense!
We can view our bills online and they are clear and easy to understand. One downside is that Good Energy haven’t fully migrated to smart meters yet so we still have to submit readings. However, this is quick and easy to do online.
I have explored comparison sites and know that I could pay a bit less with the usual, run of the mill energy provider. However, it is really important to me that we minimise our environmental impact whenever we can, so I am happy to pay a little more. I fell for the cheapest option thing before and paid the price with terrible customer service. Never again! Having said that, Good Energy’s prices are comparable with other green energy providers.
